LOCAL RIDING ON THE MIJAS COSTA
Our local coastal mountain range Sierra de Mijas has a highest point Pico Mijas of 1,150 metres. The local resorts are concentrated on the Coast, leaving an extensive area of countryside, ‘Campo’, with free access for bikers and empty trails.
The Geology is mostly marble and to a lesser extent limestone and some shale. And so, the terrain ranges from loose angular and rounded rock of various sizes, slab rock, shale, deep sand, hard pack, and pine forest loam. The vegetation cover ranges from pine forest, to low level scrub and grassland.
The single track is mostly natural, extensive and, best of all, empty. It has been developed from old access routes between villages and the forgotten industry of lime making. We also utilise hiking trails, motocross trails and the odd goat track. Plus there is an extensive range of hard pack gravel roads and ‘fire’ roads that are perfect for 29’er XC routes and gaining height on Enduro/AM routes.
WEEKLY DAY TRIP DESTINATIONS
With Bike Holiday Spain, you will discover the best places to ride in Andalucía
Our set up of The Hub, vans and bike trailers lends itself perfectly to exploring further afield.
Below you will find a taste of what Andalucía has to offer and discover why our day trips are as popular with the guides and local riders as our guests! Plus, we are constantly finding new destinations and trails, which keeps things exciting for the Guides and returning guests, alike.
Same riding conditions as above but the trails are purpose built DH/Gravity Enduro serviced by a Cable Car.
The routes here are for intermediate and above. There are several routes which are a mixture of natural and purpose built Enduro and DH. They all require a long travel bike ,gravity orientated tyres and protection (preferably a full face helmet and body armour) as the rocky terrain is unforgiving.
Malaga’s very own Lake District. Three stunningly beautiful turquoise coloured lakes bordered by pine forests and dramatic mountain landscape. Famous for the ‘Caminito Del Rey‘ the scariest walkway in the world?
The riding here is truly “Epic” in every way and there is something for all levels and abilities. Watch out for the eagles which continually circle around the sheer cliffs; looking for stray bikers!
MONTES DE MÁlAGA
A few Kilometres North of Malaga City, the Montes de Malaga Natural Park is a region of dense pine forest. Its hills range from 80m to just over 1000 metres above sea level.
The riding here is not as rocky and loose as our local trails on the Mijas Costa. It has a lot to offer beginner to intermediate groups. It is very popular with XC riders, and, as well as the rich flora and fauna, there is lots of carbon and lycra to be seen.
Is a beautiful White Village destination and the ‘municipality of the mountain bike‘ in Andalucía. An undeveloped mountain village 309 metres above sea level and surrounded by the Sierra Blanca and Sierra Alpujata.
In short the riding is Enduro paradise with technically and physically demanding routes. It is home to several events such as the Big Ride Villa de Ojen and Open Enduro Series Spain. Also very good XC riding.
In the foot hills of Sierra Bermeja, above Estepona, there is some beautiful ancient Cork Forest, where you will find some excellent riding. The riding requires good fitness levels because there is limited van access and height is gained by riding up gravel roads, but otherwise suitable for all skill levels.
The riding is sheltered and the terrain mostly loose over hard pack and hard pack. Not many rocks. The circular trails are a mixture of natural and man made with small jumps, berms and switchbacks. Another one where stray bikers beware! If the eagles don’t get you, the wild boar will.
CASARABONELA & PIZARRA
Two more pretty white mountain villages destinations that offer good All Mountain riding and photogenic lunch stops. The landscape is kinder than our local riding in Mijas Costa but access is limited.
So if you are prepared to do some pedalling you will be rewarded with good descents of over 1000 metres and moderate technical level. Also very good XC riding.
SIERRA DE LA NIEVES NATURAL PARK
Big mountain territory with limited access so one for experienced mountain bikers only.
Located North of Marbella and South of Ronda, the park is a largely uninhabited area covering 30km x 20km with several peaks above 1300m, the highest is La Torrecilla 1919m, it is a designated Natural Park and rich in flora and fauna.
SIERRA NEVADA, GRANADA
The Sierra Nevada is located a bit further away. About 2 hours drive is Sierra Nevada Bike Park and La Zubia (aka Greg Minnaar’s test track). For gravity oriented riders it is well worth the drive, available from June to September only.
Situated in the most Southern point of Europe is Tarifa. A historic and well know surf and sports town.
But its not just a surfing paradise, this area has a vast diversity and inexhaustible supply of mountain bike trails, enough to make any riders heart pump with excitement and the scenery is truly stunning with amazing views across the Med to Morocco and the Atlas mountains.
Tarifa is quickly becoming a unique mountain biking destination, the mountain bike culture blending in perfectly with the well established laid back surf culture.
